Last night, I watched the new adaptation of Jane Eyre. It’s a fantastic film, beautifully shot and brilliantly cast. I was especially taken by lead actress Mia Wasikowska who is radiant- even when styled with a severe hair-do and dowdy dress… Though I will say her classic good looks are made up so plainly, she is almost rendered sexless. Her face has a glacial prettiness that emotes solely through the powers of her Mona Lisa smile and knitted brow. And my god!- what a remarkable brow it is- permanently crinkled up to convey everything from longing to sadness to quiet anger. Mr. Rochester pulls out all the stops- his emotions are louder and needier- but Wasikowska’s Jane never truly lets him steal the spotlight. I think she’s actually quite young and successfully comes off as both vulnerable and tough as nails. She is my ideal Jane.
