Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter

I’m not really into superheroes but Dave gave this to me for Christmas so I gave it a shot. Dave and I both really like Kieron Gillen. The thing is, I like Phonogram; Dave likes Phonogram and all the Marvel stuff too- I think that makes him a pretty unique fan.

Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter (Marvel) definitely exceeded my expectations and I had a good time reading it. Beta Ray Bill is Thor’s alien oathbrother. He looks like an angry horse in armor and wields Stormbreaker, a hammer with the same powers as Thor’s.* In the Godhunter story arc, Bill tries to take down Galactus who destroyed his home and people. He finds the planets Galactus wants to eat, forcibly evacuates the citizens, then blows the planet to smithereens leaving Galactus to starve. Pretty sick. Oh, and he does all this with a captured criminal named ‘Voidian the Harbinger of yadda-yadda-yadda’ locked up on his ship. Voidian is like a Sith Lord who plots evil things while playing the organ in a floating church of doom- I liked him a bunch. I don’t know a lot of Bill’s history, but think there is juuust enough explained here to follow this particular story. The ending is kinda predictable (OK, maybe not the new character that shows up), but that’s fine by me. There are plenty of epic battles, lush illustrations of outer space, and weird touches to keep it interesting.

*I think?

  1. Beta Ray Bill was one of my favorites growing up, especially when Marvel’s Toy Biz line made an action figure of him that was all gold and chrome-y………then I grew up and realized how weird looking he is.

  2. Yeah, I don’t know how Bill’s face can look both equine and menacing (maybe it’s those teeth?)… but he’s super rad! That action figure sounds incredible- I’ve never bought many action figures though I’m sure it’d be a slippery slope…
